Diploma of Remedial Massage RPL

Diploma of Remedial Massage RPL HLT52021

Your existing clinical skills may be recognised toward the Diploma of remedial massage RPL, subject to the qualification's assessment requirements.

HLT52021 covers more than hands-on massage. It includes musculoskeletal assessment, clinical reasoning, pain, remedial techniques, treatment planning, client management and professional practice. The type of work you perform and the level of responsibility you hold are therefore more important than simply how long you have worked as a massage therapist.

How Think RPL Supports

Experience Match

We look at the assessments and treatments you already perform and identify how they relate to the qualification requirements.

Evidence Support

We help identify useful records such as client assessments, consultation forms, treatment plans and clinical notes.

Clinical Requirements

We clarify which parts of your experience may support RPL and which assessment requirements still need to be completed.

Recognition Check

If you are seeking professional association membership, health fund recognition or provider access, we help identify any separate requirements before you proceed.

Clinical Practice Requirements

200 Hours

The qualification requires 200 hours of clinical practice, including:

40hours of massage consultations
100hours of remedial massage consultations
60additional clinical hours
Some clinical practice activities must be assessed under specified conditions, with the assessor observing the candidate in person.
Your previous clinic or workplace experience may support the RPL assessment, but it does not automatically replace the mandatory clinical requirements.

Skills Assessed for RPL

Musculoskeletal Assessment

Relevant experience may include:

Postural assessmentActive and passive movementResisted movementMuscle testingPalpationOrthopaedic testingTreatment considerations

The assessor needs evidence that you can use assessment findings to determine an appropriate treatment approach.

Remedial Treatment

Relevant techniques may include:

Trigger point techniquesDeep pressure workMyofascial techniquesMuscle energy techniquesStretchingFriction techniquesPassive joint movementThermotherapy

Knowing the technique itself is not enough. You should be able to connect the treatment to the client's assessment, needs and treatment plan.

Pain and Client Management

Relevant experience can also include understanding pain, communicating treatment options, monitoring client responses and recognising when treatment needs to be modified or a referral is appropriate.

Practitioners with strong hands-on skills may still need additional assessment if they cannot demonstrate these clinical decision-making responsibilities.

Documents That Can Support Your RPL

The type of evidence that may support your assessment will depend on the work you have actually performed.

Updated CV
Employment Records
Employer Reference
Position Description
Client Assessments
Consultation Forms
Treatment Plans
Clinical Notes
Treatment Logs
Referral Records
Training Certificates
The strongest evidence shows what you personally assessed, planned and performed. Client information should be appropriately removed or de-identified where required.

Evidence for Self-Employed Practitioners

Self-employed remedial massage therapists may also be able to demonstrate their experience.

Relevant records can include:

Business Registration
Appointment Records
Invoices
Consultation Forms
Treatment Plans
Clinical Notes
Referral Records
Professional Development
The evidence must still allow the assessor to verify your work and determine whether the required competencies have been demonstrated.

Using Overseas Massage Experience

Relevant massage experience gained overseas may also contribute where it can be verified.

You may still need to demonstrate knowledge of Australian requirements relating to:

Consent
Privacy
Infection Control
WHS
Scope of Practice
Professional Boundaries
Referral Procedures
The clinical assessment requirements of the Australian qualification still apply.

Is Your Experience Remedial or General Massage?

General massage and remedial massage involve different levels of clinical responsibility.

General massage

General massage experience may focus mainly on relaxation, wellbeing and routine massage techniques.

Remedial massage

Remedial massage experience typically involves:

  • Client Assessment
  • Musculoskeletal Conditions
  • Clinical Reasoning
  • Treatment Planning
  • Pain Management
  • Treatment Review
If you already assess musculoskeletal presentations and decide how treatment should be planned and adjusted, your experience may be more closely aligned with the Diploma.

Health Fund and Professional Recognition

Obtaining the qualification does not automatically guarantee:

Health Fund Recognition
HICAPS Access
Professional Association Membership
Professional associations and health funds can have their own requirements relating to clinical training and RPL.
If professional membership or health fund recognition is your main reason for obtaining the qualification, these requirements should be checked before you proceed.
